Sarajevo

Everything started in Sarajevo.

First, we talked to people on the streets of Sarajevo to ask them what they think of Dayton.

Then we spoke to some experts, as Paja asked them what he should ask when he travelled to the US:

  • Jovan Divjak: Brigadier General (Ret.); Founder, Education Builds BiH
  • Stjepan Kljuić: Member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina (1991-1996)
  • Violeta Čibukčić: Volunteer Wartime Nurse; Director of American Chamber of Commerce in BiH
  • Harry Miller: Mathematics Professor
  • Tim Clancy: Wartime Humanitarian Worker; BiH Tourism Entrepreneur
  • Kurt Bassuener: Democratization Policy Council; Former Advisor to Paddy Ashdown, OHR

New York City

The crew’s first stop was New York City.

We did some site-seeing, checking out midtown, Times  Square, the Brooklyn Bridge, Wall Street and Fifth Avenue. Friends in Harlem and Chelsea gave us a place to sleep.

Paja went to Columbia University and the UN to talk to  two people who followed developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war and then during the peace:

  • Tanya Domi: Adjunct Professor, Columbia University; OSCE Mission to BiH, 1996 – 2000
  • Erol Avdović: UN Senior Diplomatic Correspondent

Dayton

After NYC the crew went to Dayton, Ohio for the official 20-year anniversary conference.

Spaho and Niklovani checked out the city, visiting a brewery, the Packard car museum and meeting some of Dayton’s residents.

Meanwhile, Paja did interviews, spoke on a panel, and went to President Bill Clinton’s keynote address and lunch.

They finished that part of the journey at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where the Dayton Agreement was agreed and finally signed.

  • Bruce Hitchner: Professor, Tufts University; Founder and Chair of the Dayton Peace Accords Project (1998 – 2014)
  • Bodo Weber: Senior Associate, Democratization Policy Council
  • Matt Joseph: Dayton City Commissioner

Washington DC

The journey ended in Washington, DC.

Paja spoke to people who were working on policy during and after the war, and shared thoughts on Bosnia and Herzegovina’s post-war development:
